Innovation in Journalism

Idea – A website where people are able to report things going on in their neighbourhood.

We have all been there when, something has happened in our area and we must anxiously wait to see it come on the news. To be frank, it is kind of annoying, being so close to the accident or celebration and waiting for a confirmation by the news to accept and digest it. It is about time where we were put in charge of what happens and making sure that the information we are receiving is correct and true to the source.

Every neighbourhood will have their own code to the website to get exclusive content that is valuable to them. Hopefully the app will be able to include events that are going to be put on as well as houses up for sale. This idea came to me through the struggles of which I perceive in my neighbourhood. In the area that I live in we have quite a few events that go on throughout the year as well as shared thoughts and opinions on things we need to do to better the community.

The audience base for this product is home owners so, male and females around the age of 25 and above. Due to the website being community based the audience for this is open.

I will implement this website by promoting it through social media, but most conveniently by posting leaflets and flyers through the post. For this to be successful it must be completed in a way that makes the consumers feel comfortable and easy for them to access data.

A website is quite simple to make, HTML and CSS are things that I am comfortable with using and know how to create profoundly. However, what I am not familiar with is the database side. With people being able to share information, also means that they would have to be able to build an online profile of themselves. This would enable them to be able to comment, share and create within the dashboard. To create a substantial and stable product I would have to learn how to administer a CMS (Content Management System).  CMS is a program that stores digital content.

Eventually I would like to this website into an app and make it more accessible to people who are on the go. Apps are becoming increasingly popular I this day and age, therefore it is crucial that I keep up with the times and continue to do so. There are many plans that I have in mind for this product such as being able to incorporate augmented reality. The possibility of tagging a location and pinning it to an article. However, for the time being I would like to focus on the website and then if needed to expand from its success.

Digital Art

Idea – Virtual Reality meets Augmented Reality Virtual Reality is on the rise and becoming increasingly popular in society. It focuses on making things seem real when they are not, they are also known for allowing us to escape our reality and to enter a digital one. What if there was a way to blur the lines between Virtual Reality and the real world?  My product idea is to create a game of which consumers can be a part of their favourite film or TV franchise. For example, lets focus on ‘Stranger Things’, how great would it be to be able to experience the ‘Upside Down’ by putting on a headset and being able to divulge in a world that seems real, but is not. This virtual reality game can be accessed three ways; 1. An event in your local city  2. Online  3. Disc release for console (PlayStation or Xbox) By attending an event you will be able to move around, run, jump and skip -if needed to. However, if you were to just play online and/or using your console you would...

Audiences and Consumption

In this evaluation, I will be analysing the works of Long and Wall (2012) and Stokes and Maltby (1999). Audience and consumption is developed around the ideology of consumption and the way we consume and media and its meanings. Media plays a crucial part in lives daily, whether we notice or not. The key themes that were in both chapters were the conjunction between sub cultures and how they are created through media and how the media then portrays it. This however has its downfalls too. The creation of subcultures places pressure on the individuals. Not only does it place pressure on the audience but it also goes against ethics. Is it ethical to be putting an image of something that we know isn’t achievable and making people believe that it is? Audience consumption affects the online community, having online communities makes people believe that they have a sense of identity, but why do they feel as if they don’t have an identity? Long and Wall suggested that discussion forums, ne...

Discourse and Analysis

Discourse analysis has been defined ‘as a close examination of text, including visual imagery and sound as well as spoken of written language.’ Discourse analysis is a developing method which stemmed from the scrutinises of mediums.  I will be using the works of Smith and Allan (2004) and Smoodin (1994) to understand and come to terms with what discourse analysis is and how it is used every day. Discourse analysis is almost like a gateway into interpretation and assessing the underlying message that was set from the media owners. It is almost correlates with reasons as to why regulations have been put into place. Smoodin’s work is primarily about the work of Disney, however what is interesting about the disclosure of Disney, is how the ideas and perceptions came across and the ways of which they did so. They used worldwide problems to promote certain aspects of their business venture and to certain audiences. Alongside this, Smith and Bell believed that there are a variable am...
